Local campaign fund raising- Part 2

January 30, 2012
By

As The Bulldog reported last week, a study of campaign financing reports to the Illinois State Board of Elections indicated that in 2011 local candidates and their committees raised $6.397 million.

Three prominent politicians were responsible for 67 percent of those monies:

  • Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, $2,667,570 or 41.69 percent
  • Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, $897,121 or 14.02 percent
  • Illinois Senate President John Cullerton, $733,049 or 11.46 percent
Excluding certain committees:
  • The three persons above
  • Any person who did not win office and do not hold office
The Bulldog was left to study ten political committees. Despite our exclusion, we need to note that the third largest campaign committee in the area belongs to former Ald. Eugene Schulter, $800,717. That amount includes a sizable investment and a small amount in the 47th Ward organization.
In addition to his war chest, 47th Ward candidate Tom O’Donnell maintains a campaign fund of $17,604, the largest such fund among any losing candidate for public office in this area.
O’Donnell raised $138,580 for his campaign.
The eleven campaigns below retain about $1.3 million in campaign funds. In total, they raised more than $1.676 million in 2011.
