Lane Sr. Nicholas Santos Kicks Winning FG in Overtime

Lane Tech defeated Curie, 16-13, Friday night at Lane Stadium in a double overtime thriller. The Indian (5-2, 4-0) battled the Condors (4-4, 3-1) for a share of first place in the Chicago Public League’s Illini Red Division.

Lane’s senior quarterback Jack McLaughlin ran for a long touchdown late in the first quarter to put the Indians up 7-0.  Curie ran the ball up the middle with ease at times behind an impressive offensive line and tied the game in the second quarter.

The second half saw more running between the tackles by both teams with few passes and fewer completions.  Curie held the ball for much of the fourth quarter only to have Lane block a nineteen year field goal attempt at the end of regulation to force the game into overtime.

On the first possession in overtime, Curie looked unstoppable as its offensive line controlled the line of scrimage.  Curie scored a touchdown on three straight runs up the middle but missed the extra point.  Lane and Jack McLaughlin quickly answered with McLaughlin’s second rushing towndown to draw the Indians even.  Curie blocked the extra point that would have given Lane the victory.

In the second overtime, Lane’s run defense stiffened when sophomore cornerback Neil Molloy and junior lineback Ricardo Reyes stuffed a first down run.  On the next play, Lane senior Joel Velazquez recovered a Curie fumble to give the ball back to Indians for a winning score.  Lane tried two running plays up the middle for no gain.  On third down, McLaughlin rolled right but through the ball away when no one was open in the end zone preserving a game winning field goal attempt.

Just having had his extra point attempt blocked by a furious Curie rush, Lane kicker Nicholas Santos lined up for the game winner.  This time the Lane line held and the kick sailed through the north end zone uprights for a ten yard double overtime winning field goal.

Lane moves on to play Simeon next Friday night at 7:15 at Gately Stadium for the conference championship.
