The Amundsen Vikings boys soccer team opened their class 2A regional play by edging the North Grand Eagle Owls.
The Vikings (7-6-3, 3-3-1) defeated the Eagle Owls 1-0 at Lane Tech Stadium Monday night. The lone goal was scored by junior defender Rolando Aguirre with 21:20 left in the first half on a header into the right corner of the net. The Vikings had an early exit in the city playoffs at the hands of the Lake View Wildcats, and were glad to come out with a win in the state playoffs en route to a hopeful repeat as regional champs.
“We had a hard time playing (against Lake View in the city playoffs),” said Aguirre. “We just have to focus on the now, the state championship. We’ll just focus on that for now and that’s it.”
The Vikings advanced to play the Prosser Falcons this Saturday in the regional championship, as the Falcons defeated the Northside College Prep Mustangs 3-1 Tuesday. Even before the Vikings knew who their next opponent would be, they knew they had to come out ready to play.
“Prosser and Northside are both very good teams,” said Aguirre. “We’ll be ready for them. Whoever we play, we’ll be ready.”
“Right now is where it gets tough,” said head coach Alex Perez. “Last year we took regionals, so I’m confident that we’ll be consistent on Saturday. I can tell the boys are definitely hungry and they want this as much as I do.”
