St. Bens’ Girls Ready for Excellence on and off the Court

November 30, 2012
The St. Benedict Bengals girls basketball team is known not only for their continued improvement on the court, but for their consistent excellence in the classroom as well. This year will be no different for head coach Frank DeAngelis and his crew. The Bengals will be returning all of their starters (including six seniors and four juniors) from last year in the 2012-13 campaign, as they look to bounce back from a loss to Willows Academy in the regional championship at the end of the '11-'12 season. "Last season, we just didn't have much depth," said Deangelis. "This season, we're about seven or eight (upperclassmen) deep as far as being strong on fundamentals and knowing the game. In one year, we've doubled the girls on the roster. The program is back and going in the right place." The Bengals are proud to return with a team GPA of 3.4, and DeAngelis knows that Academics will continue to be a huge focus for his team. The school will also continue to host several events for the youth of the community, including "kids night out" which will be held December 14th in the St. Benedict gym. Between the hard work, the grades, and their overall personalities, this group of St. Bens girls are second to none. "The girls did a great job of keeping things afloat (last season)," DeAngelis said. "They're an extraordinary team, they do everything right. It's a good group of girls to be around." The Bengals get things started Wednesday night as they take on St. Gregory at home.   *** 12-03-12 12.15P *** The story has been updated to note Willows Academy was the victor in the regional game against St. Benedicts. ***
