What a difference one week makes. Mt. Carmel struggled to beat St. Rita 7-6 in the Catholic League football playoff championship while Curie easily beat Simeon 38-8 in the Public League football title game.

Mt. Carmel (10-3) shook off its recent offensive woes by beating Curie (11-3) 49-15 in the Prep Bowl at Gately Stadium on Friday. Mt Carmel didn't look like a team that had scored only seven points in two games.

A.J. Ries had a day to remember as he scored a Prep Bowl record five touchdowns and rushed for 232 yards in his final high school game to lead the Caravan to their 12th Prep Bowl championship in school history.

"It's always a great honor to win the Prep Bowl," Ries said after the win.

"Playing in the Prep Bowl means a lot to us as a program," Mt. Carmel head coach Frank Lenti admitted. "There are only nine teams in the state that finish with a win and we wanted to be one of them."

Ries scored twice in the first half and he put the game away with three second half touchdowns.

Curie's Chris Baldwin was one of the top players in the Public League this season. The Caravan limited Baldwin to five yards rushing on five carries.

Mt. Carmel has won 12 state football titles and 12 Prep Bowls.

The biggest story in high school football was the quest by Phillips (14-0) to become the first CPS team to win a state football championship. The Wildcats broke that barrier and completed a perfect season by beating Belleville Althoff 51-7 on Friday night in DeKalb at NIU.

Quarterback Quayvon Skanes rushed for 141 yards in four touchdowns to lead Phillips in the Class 4A championship game.
