There could be three basketball matchups this season between Fenwick and St. Joseph. Fenwick won Round 1 with a 54-42 win over St. Joseph on Thursday night in Oak Park. Fenwick's Mike Smith, who is coming off a week where he had two 30-point games, led the Friars with 21 points. Nick Rakocevic, who is also one of the top players in state, led the Chargers with 16 points. Smith scored 16 points in the second half while Rakocevic was limited to only two baskets in the second half. "Mike is a great leader," Fenwick guard Jacob Keller said after the win. Rakocevic was a factor in the first half with 12 points and 9 rebounds. This game was decided in the fourth quarter. The Chargers were limited to only one basket after leading 38-35. Smith scored nine points in the final quarter while Fenwick (18-2, 7-0) made 10 free throws to close in on the Catholic League North title. The rematch could take place in the Catholic League tournament in February. Fenwick has lost this season to Morgan Park and Benet while going unbeaten in league play. In the other big game, Simeon (17-3, 9-1) beat Morgan Park (16-2, 8-1) 70-67. Evan Gilyard led the Wolverines with 24 points in the road victory at Morgan Park. Most people know by now that this game was rescheduled after a boycott and protest by the parents of Morgan Park basketball players. The game was going to be played at Brooks. A third meeting of the Battle on Vincennes, location of both city schools, could take place at the CPS tournament in February. The only question now who is number one team in area after both games? "It doesn't matter," Keller said about the possibility of being ranked number one. "We want to win."
