Onoh! 3 TDs to Lead Von Stueben 41-18 Over Amundsen
By John Montgomery
What a season debut.
Von Stueben started the season by winning its first ever varsity football game 41-18 over Amundsen last Friday at Winnemac Stadium. The end of the game was better than the beginning as the Panthers allowed a touchdown before going on to rout the Vikings in the season opener for both squads.
"It was huge to win the first game to build confidence," Von Steuben head football coach Alan Rood said after the victory.
Dominic Onoh scored three touchdowns for the Panthers who put this contest away by scoring twice in the fourth quarter.
"The kids were nervous," Rood admitted. "By the end of the first quarter, we started to play well."
Von Stueben played at the sophomore level last season and won five games. The Panthers stunned Schurz to start the sophomore season last year.
"These guys know how to play," Rood stated. "we know what we're doing. We know how to lineup. We know how to block and tackle. They will compete."
Von Stueben will face neighborhood-rival Roosevelt this week for the Kimball Cup since both schools are located on the same street.
The Panthers will play in the INTER-CITY SECTION of CPS this year.
"I would like to go 9-0, but that doesn't happen all the time," Rood said. "I want to win conference. I have high expectations for our team. Right now, we're taking it game by game and week to week. My expectation is to work hard. We worked hard to prepare for this season."
